Tools of tree-ring research

Main menu

We use a variety of specialized equipment and programs to gain insight into tree growth over a wide range of time from minutes to years and centuries.

Increment borer

The increment borer is a must in the backpack of every tree-ring researcher.

Dendrometer

Tree stems shrink during the day and expand again at night. We measure these fluctuations automatically with dendrometers.

Microtome

Microtomes are tools used to cut very thin slices or "sections" of material.

Sap-flow sensor

With sap-flow sensors, we determine the amount of water that flows through the stem.
